Could the PPR Sanitary Pipes be used at high temperature water systems?
They could be used but they are not under guarantee like they are for the cold water systems. They are covered by the guarantee only when they are used at 20°C and 25 bars. At hot water systems Oxy-stable pipes should be used.
What do PPr Type 1,Type 2 and Type 3 refer to? What are the differences between them?
Plastic Pipes get more resistant as they are developed. The first produced polypropylene’s structure was consisting of propylene molecules. This was called Type 1 Polypropylene Homopolymer. Later propylene molecules with mixed sequences have been added into the propylene molecules. This was called Type 2 Polypropylene Block Copolymer. Later the Type 3 product have been obtained, which has a structure including ethylene molecules regularly sequenced among the propylene molecules.
Today, because of the features they posses, Type 2 and Type 3 are widely used. Type 2 is used only at cold water networks. It is not resistant to hot fluids. Type 3 could be used at hot water since it is resistant to hot fluids.
How do we differentiate between Type 2 and Type 3?
We cannot differentiate with the eye or with the density, pressure tests. We can only differentiate through the DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimeter) test. Each plastic material emits different amounts of heat under a certain temperature. The increase of heat graphic reveals the identity of the plastic.
How do we understand that we haven’t bought Type 2 instead of Type 3?
If the firm doesn’t have an international certificate it is hard to understand. It can be learnt through demanding DSC test certificate. Since Type 2 is slightly cheaper than Type 3 it is allowed to be used by anyone, who doesn’t have certificates of the international testing institutes (SKZ,DVGW). TSE doesn’t make regular inspections.
Can the PPR pipes be used in under-floor heating systems?
They can be used but there are some points that should be paid attention to. Molecules of PPR pipes crystallize under 0°C. In this case we can think of it as if it is glass. There wouldn’t be a decrease in pressure resistance but when it takes a blow under these circumstances, tiny cracks may form. During transportation and installation the temperature of the medium shouldn’t be under 0°C.
